1st INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON DESIGN, PROCESSING AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ADVANCED BIOMEDICAL MATERIALS AND DEVICES
29-30 MARCH 2018
FLORIANOPOLIS, BRAZIL
WELCOME!
Dear Colleagues,
You are cordially invited to attend and participate in the BioMatDevices 2018 – 1st Workshop on Design, Processing and Characterization of Advanced Biomedical Materials and Devices, which will take place from 29th to the 30st of March 2018 in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
BioMatDevices 2018 aims to promote a forum for the presentation and discussion of aspects related to the development of advanced biomedical materials and devices, counting on the presence of invited speakers of recognized international merit who will have the opportunity to interact with professionals, researchers, teachers and students with interests or acting in related areas.
Florianóplis is the state capital of Santa Catarina and is also known as the Island of Magic. Florianópolis enchants by its more than a hundred beaches spread throughout the coastal island and the small continental peninsula forming the city. Other important attractions to visit, as the beautiful and agitated Lagoa da Conceição (Conceição Lagoon), the peaceful Lagoa do Peri (Peri Lagoon), the traditional Centro Histórico (Historical Center), the cosmopolitan Avenida Beira-Mar (Seashore Avenue), the bucolic Azorean districts of Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Ribeirão da Ilha, besides Portuguese forts, museums, churches, theaters and the city postcard: the Hercílio Luz Bridge
Welcome to the 1st International Workshop on Design, Processing and Characterization of Advanced Biomedical Materials and Devices

Prof. Dr. Filipe Silva is a full professor in the Mechanical Engineering department of the University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal, and holds a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the same university. Currently, he is the head of the Microfabrication and Integrated Systems Laboratory. This Laboratory is integrated in the Center for MicroElectroMechanical Systems (CMEMS) that is a research center rated with Excellent by the Portuguese national research agency (FCT). He has experience in the development of jewelry and mechanical behaviour analysis of materials. Prof Filipe Silva is a leading researcher in multimaterial and functionally graded materials with more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals (ISI). He is (co-) author of 3 registered patents and 2 more currently submitted.
Mutlu Özcan is a Professor and Head of Dental Materials Unit in University of Zurich, Switzerland. She did her Licenciate in Dentistry from Marmar University Istanbul in 1993. She completed her Doctorate in Medical Sciences from University of Groningen, Netherlands. She has authored more than 400 scientific and clinical articles in peer-reviewed journals, is a well-sought lecturer, receiver of several international awards and has held numerous continuing education courses worldwide. She has Honorary Professorship positions at various universities some of which are São Paulo State University (Brazil), University of Madrid (Spain), University of Florida (USA) and University of Hong Kong (China). She serves also for the editorial boards of several scientific journals. Her clinical expertise is on reconstructive dentistry and her scientific work focuses on translational and clinical research.
Dr. Yu Zhang received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Monash University, Australia in 2002. He worked as a Postdoctoral fellow at National Institute of Standards and Technology before joining New York University College of Dentistry as an Assistant Professor in 2005. His research interests include the development of functionally graded ceramics and nanostructured materials for damage resistance, aesthetics, and bioactivities. Dr. Zhang received 5 NIH R01 grants, as well as an NSF grant. He is the recipient of the Arthur R. Frechette Award of IADR. Dr. Zhang has published over 100 journal articles and book chapters. He also holds 3 US patents.

Prof. Andrés Lasagni, MSc in Chemical Engineering & PhD (summa cum laude) in Materials Science, is director of the Center for Advanced Micro-Photonics (CAMP) at Fraunhofer IWS and full professor at Technische Universität Dresden, in Germany. He has over 20 year experience in the field of laser processing, especially for micro/nano fabrication of structured surfaces. A. Lasagni is author or co-author of 350 publications in scientific journals and 30 patents and has been awarded with several international prizes including the Materials Science and Technology Prize 2017 from the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS).
Laurent Gremillard obtained his PhD in materials science from INSA-Lyon (France) in 2002, then worked for two years as a post-doctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He was then recruited as a scientist by the CNRS (Materials, Engineering and Science laboratory, INSA-Lyon). He is now CNRS senior scientist in the same laboratory, and supervises the “Biological Interaction and Biomaterials” research group. He specializes in the development, microstructural characterization and durability of ceramic biomaterials, and published more than 120 articles on this topic in international journals. He was awarded the Bronze Medal of CNRS in recognition of his work.
